Here's a video from last year around the city.  Now this year, they're adding a special day especially for URBAN projects.

The Unleavened Bread Cafe neighborhood isn't the only location -- there are several around the city.  But this page is primarily about the projects of the UBcafe & neighborhood.  Hope it helps coordinate things somewhat.  Btw, if you're not yet familiar with the cafe ministry, here's a short video overview....

As you read the below projects, feel free to hit the EDIT link at the top of this page, insert the password ('cafeteam') and ADD YOUR NAME SOMEWHERE near an appropriate project.  Or add an idea.  Or whatever way you think you can help this be successful.

Project #1 -- Clean out the cafe basement (and other inside-cafe tasks), readying it for the new bicycle cooperative, and making room for computer hardware training needs.  The basement still has a ton of old pottery molds which need to be thrown away.  Then clean the shelving up for other uses.  Also other inside-cafe tasks to be accomplished, such as kitchen storage room straightened, etc..

  • Dan Gushee, Leader  (Computers ministry at cafe)
  • Nancy Stimson, Leader (Bicycle ministry at cafe)
  • ____________, Co-leader (from Southside's FHL coalition)
  • A dumpster needs to be available that day.  David Scott has one.

  • Appx 15 volunteers for 3 hrs.  (????) -- bring your handgloves.  And if dust bothers you, bring a face-mask.
  • Benefit:  The cafe is a highly useful centralized location for urban ministry -- so creating more usable space within it, leverages its potential for other neat ministry works... such as the bicycle & computer overhaul facility.  And what an encouragement to those who labor there 364 more days per year!
  • 7/24/2007 update:    Project(s) largely done... but we can always use more help... up to 5 volunteers x 3 hrs.

Project #2 -- Repaint widow's house... 636 E. 36th St. nearby the cafe.

  • David Woodrupp, Leader  (this house belongs to my mother-in-law, Mrs. Faye Gleghorn, who is a senior citizen of our neighborhood.  Thank you so much for your help.)
  • Kevin Warren, Co-leader
  • _____________, Co-leader from the FHL Carmel contingency (Paul Backer will assign shortly)
  • Note:  FHL Carmel group (Paul Backer) may NOT be available on Tues 7/24, but wants to help on other days -- the church/vols can provide brushes, rollers, etc.  All the widow needs to provide is the paint itself.  All this will be clarified asap.... stay tuned.
  • Appx 15 volunteers for 3 hrs (????) -- bring your handgloves and face-mask.
    • Old paint scraping
    • Remove storm windows
    • Painting – wood between panes
    • Paint- wheelchair ramps in front and back of house
    • Replace and paint rear door (parts and materials on hand )
  • Benefit:   This 79-year old lady really needs her house painted.  What a great kindness that could be.  And an improvement in the neighborhood, not to mention the encouragement that comes from multicultural ministry in the name of Christ.
  • 7/24/2007 update:    No one was able to work on this project today... We're still planning on a Carmel team to come help later this week.

Project #3 -- Paint the front wall (inside) of the cafe.

  • Sister Elease/Sister Vicki, Leader
  •  _______________Co-leader,  Claudia Rider, helper
  • The interior wall at the entrance of the cafe needs to be repainted (white).  The roof has been repaired to stop future leaks -- now we just need to get the wall back to looking good.  Blessing... not a messing.
  • Some prep work needs to be done BEFORE paint is applied.  Dan Gushee has committed to accomplish some of that prep-work BEFORE 7/24... so our volunteers can simply PAINT IT.
  • [Need to quickly acquire the necessary paint, but the vol-churches will brushes, rollers, or whatever. -- Sister Elease is working on it.]
  • Appx 3 volunteers for 3 hrs. -- bring a face-mask if you'd like one.
  • Benefit:   The cafe is a warm, welcoming location for neighbors and others to come... not only to come in out of the cold (or heat) and eat, but importantly also get to know each other in a friendly environment showing the love of Christ.  And it's a great multicultural mixing environment for our suburban friends to come interact via the various programs at the cafe each week.... Bible-studies, computer training, support-groups, etc.  Repainting the front wall will make the cafe brighter and nicer.... not to mention, encouraging those who minister there throughout the year.
  • 7/24/2007 update:    Largely done.  Prep & plaster work done.  And primer-coat applied.  Just needs a coat of paint now.  3 vols x 3 hrs.

Project #4 -- Parking-lot Cleanup... and northward from 30th Street, to 34th Street.

  • David Scott, Leader
  • James 'Cisco',  Co-leader
  • The cafe parking lot is the location that a young man was killed a few weeks ago.  Anything done to reverse such evil will be a great statement of hope among our neighbors.  The parking lot needs to be picked up... including trash & broken glass etc.  Across the street there are two other empty lots which could use cleaning up.  And likewise, we could be helpful among neighbors & businesses up Central Ave.... north to 34th Street.
  • Appx _____ (all the volunteers we can get)... for 3hrs. -- bring handgloves, rakes, shop-brooms, gas-powered string-trimmers, clippers, etc., if you have them.
  • 7/24/2007 update:    All our volunteers got a ton of stuff picked up from the neighborhood... PTL.  Project is complete.

Special Note:    The FHL Prayer Trailer spent the day with us at the UB Cafe til 2:30pm.   'Weeks of Hope' volunteers came especially early to clear & clean the parking lot before they arrived.

Neighbors enjoyed being able to pray with volunteers who traveled with the trailer today.  Praise God.

Prayer is always welcome.  And remember, we always want to encourage our community to especially pray for friends, neighbors, community leaders, pastors, teachers, and civic heroes when they hear the "Community Prayer Siren" every Friday at 11am.

Project #5 -- Ice-Cream Social Inside The Cafe... (Noon til 2pm)

  • Dave Voelker, Leader
  • For neighbors, volunteers or anyone stopping by the cafe in the afternoon.  We'd like to create a hospitable environment for friends and neighbors to come interact.  Get to know people you may otherwise never get to know.   And help folks get to know about other great opportunities at the cafe and in the neighborhood.
  • There's VBS that evening -- How could this ice-cream social environment assist the cause?
  • Beware of logistics, including VBS later.  Communications Team will be manning the computers, and also have laptops in use.  And remember, vols will be painting the front inside wall of the cafe portion.
  • One of our churches (Westfield church) is providing volunteers who are very interested in serving and also being able to interact with neighbors while doing so.
  • 15 Volunteers x 3hrs... Will be involved in setup and takedown.  And intentional interaction with neighbors... especially LISTENING.
  • 7/24/2007 update:    Had a great time together.  Volunteers (after our projects were over) enjoyed ice cream as they learned more about urban ministry.  Pastor Joe shared what church ministry in the neighborhood is like.  And volunteers were treated to some neighborhood Christian hip-hop by Bobby Maull.... and got totally jiggy with it.  LOL.

Project #6 -- Popsicle Giveaway At Curbside

  • [Southside Group's], Leader
  • [Indy's Southside FHL coalition adopted this project.]
  • Note:   The cafe is at the corner of two ONE-WAY streets....  Central Ave (southbound)... and 30th Street (westbound).  Perfect for handing stuff out at curbside... especially using a series of handmade signs leading to our corner.
  • We'd like to hand-out popsicles from curbside on Central Avenue, nearing the cafe's parking lot where a young man was killed just a few short weeks ago.  Bless our neighborhood, in our ongoing fight against evil.
  • Appx 10 vols x 3 hrs.  Come prepared... bring your own sunscreen, hats, etc.... coolers... Oh, and the popsicles???
  • Ideas... bring or make signs... ('Burma Shave' method)... placing young folks further up Central Ave announcing... "Workers Ahead"....  'Faith Hope & Love At Work'.   Free Popsicles Ahead On Left.... Our Gift To You....   No Cash Accepted. None!   ...  And then signs further down Central Ave as they leave... 'God Bless You.' .... "Faith Hope & Love"....  "City-wide Initiative"... and lastly... "FHLinternational.org"....  Tune to 97.9 FM...
  • IF WE COME UP WITH MORE VOLUNTEERS, EVEN.... we could also do 30th Street (west-bound).

Project #7 -- VBS... Vacation Bible School every EVENING this week... 6pm til ____.

  • Sister Gail Reaves, Leader.   (wife of pastor Joe Reaves.  Greater Faith House of Prayer operates out of the cafe's community room every Sunday).
  • ______________,  Co-leader.
  • Sydney Linney, Vol Coordinator, Weeks of Hope
  • [Sister Gail... can you  describe the  VBS week here, and  especially regarding how these vols can help you?]
  • Flyer Distribution AHEAD OF THIS WEEK.
  • Help make sandwiches and set up for tonight's VBS.  Appx 35 neighborhood children attend each evening.
  • 7/24/2007 update:    Project complete -- what a big help these volunteers were, for the neighborhood pastor & his wife.
  •

Project #8 -- Watson Park Cleanup  (Thursday, 7/26)...

  • David Woodrupp, Leader
  • ______________, Co-leader  (David Scott???)
  • Sydney Linney, 'Weeks of Hope' Volunteer Coordinator
  • [David Woodrupp -- can you find some leaders for this?]
  • Nearby Watson Park can always use cleanup and planting things.
  • 7/24/2007 update:   Project is for THURSDAY 7/26... YET TO BE DONE.  'Weeks of Hope' vols will be accomplishing this on Thursday.

Project #9 -- Communications Team Needed Today...

  • General Hospitality & Administrative Help (sign-in table, brochures, helping volunteers know where to go, what to do, etc.... Neil will help train you on-location that morning... come early.)
    • Ben McCann & a friend
    •
  • Embedded Reporters... [Neil... Leader]... Communicating during the day... via audio-interviews to podcast... and even video-clips of work in progress.
    • Esther -- .mp3 interviews.  Travel with David Scott and his pickup team?  Interview vols, but especially neighbors as possible.
    • Cheri Herron... photos, photos, photos.  [FotosByCheri.com]

    • Mike Boler -- LIVE internet-radio station.  We'll be using his _______ phone# (voice-mails) to be able to do (SHORT interviews, by simply using a cell phone.  Low tech, High effect.  Mike will be manning his station, and helping get those voice-mails back to us to post.
    • Scott Wilder? -- Video (streaming?  YouTube for sure.  Special Surprise Innovation that day -- stay tuned.  Just a suggestion from Jon Swanson in Fort Wayne: ustream.tv  allows you to stream in real time for free.
    • Tom Ho - "photo-blog" using Flickr  (use cafe's wireless internet).  Upload the photos during the day and see them at http://www.profilactic.com/mashup/drthomasho with RSS feed at http://www.profilactic.com/rss/drthomasho
      • Tom... cover the Mid-North Food Pantry.  Get a photo or two and perhaps interview .  Staff person will be there, although Tues is not a day they're open.  So someone else may try to get over there on Weds... (probably Neil)... and followup.
      • Similarly, get over to North UMC (38xMeridian)... soup kitchen.  Photos & interviews as practical.
      • Then any photos/interviews at cafe.
      •
    •  ____________, Social-networkers Needed !!!    Spread the buzz!
    • 7/24/2007 update:    We had a number of these communications team folks.  Got some great sound-bytes and photos uploaded to Flickr.  We'll finish getting these items adequately blogged and introduced at UBcafe.com shortly.

    • Important Instructions for our General Admin/Communications Team that day...
      • Centralized Communications Center -- we'll have all the critical contact info available at the cafe re all the project team-leaders, etc... as well as a growing list of media & new-media contacts here in the Greater Indianapolis area.  As well, we should be prepped to handle media requests from the secular media as necessary.   [How about helping 'account' for projects that day?  Or at least REPORT as Merlin's FHL leaders do their 'accounting'.]   [Subsequent Note:  This project helped stimulate the 'Vital Vine' citywide phonetree concept.  Check it out for sure... and help by adding YOUR thoughts.]
      • Urban Ministries to highlight via interviews... like the Mid-North Food Pantry (for sure), the cafe itself, Tab's soup kitchen, North's soup kitchen, Rebuilding The Wall, etc.  Here's a list we're compiling of Mapleton Fall Creek Neighborhood ministries.  And here's a  list of CCDA-affiliates in the city -- either of these lists would make a good place to start.  Also, be sure to cover our young people coming from out of town... Weeks of Hope (VBS project and Watson Park project above)
      • ChristianVolunteering.org... is a site we'd like to get exposure for... for ongoing, year-end ability to rally help for urban ministry 365.  And they even have a category for 'virtual' volunteers.  [Not sure yet just how we'll help them... Ideas anyone?
      • Tag everything.  Whatever you put out on the web, TAG it (or have one of our people tag it for you) with at least these tags... 'blews'  'fhlinternational'  'ubcafe'  'indianapolis'   'indiana'  ...and whatever other tags you might want to add.
      • Flickr Tags... Use the same tags mentioned above.  'fhlinternational'  'ubcafe'  'indianapolis'  'indiana'.  But you needn't then also tag them using del.icio.us.
      • UBcafe.com will be our primary COMMUNICATIONS blog re FHL activities in the cafe neighborhood (Mapleton Fall Creek).  Refer almost everyone there.  We'll be blogging throughout the day (Lord willing)... and accepting 'comments' there. (I have a question for those of us who are blogging: I'll be posting from my phone to my Windows Live Spaces blog http://tomho.spaces.live.com so do you want to link to it from UBcafe.com? or RSS feed is http://tomho.spaces.live.com/feed.rss)
      • Our 'Ask Anything Saturday' wiki-page (the one you're on right now) is primarily for COORDINATION.  If you're soliciting virtual help (getting the buzz going, etc.) encourage them to also visit this page.
      • Spread the BUZZ... We encourage you to email your best contacts (don't spam people, please)... or get the word out to your social networks, blogroll, etc... encouraging people to catch the vision of the 'big-C' Church SERVING their communities in the name of Christ.
      • We'll have a SURPRISE INNOVATION available that day, Lord willing.   You'll enjoy.  Stay tuned on Tues, 7/24.  But it's a secret -- don't let the word out early.
      •

Special Note:  Phillips Temple project... Not far away from the cafe, there will be another FHL Urban Project going on at Phillips Temple (Angela Bolen, Leader).  She's near & dear to the cafe too, so we'd like very much to be able to share volunteers with projects there as well... perhaps especially as we do neighborhood cleanup from the cafe (30th Street) up to Phillips Temple (34th Street).

  • Got some photos re this project too... and uploaded to Flickr.

Urban Projects on OTHER days during FHL week...

Apparently there are other work-teams available for the neighborhood from 9-3 Mon through Thurs.  Those groups consists of 5 youth and an adult leader.  This allows the groups to be in different areas.  Urban ministry-leaders that could use them for defined projects that week... leave a note here...

Flyer (went) out... to our community (and posters)... needs to address these points...

  • FYI... It's the annual "Faith Hope & Love" week..  Our neighborhood is partcularly involved on Tues, 7/24... 'Urban Projects Day'.  So you'll be seeing some volunteers around the neighborhood, picking up trash, cleaning up vacant lots, cutting weeds, etc.  For more info, visit UBcafe.com or stop by the Unleavend Bread Cafe.
  • Prayer Trailer will be available (on the very spot of a homicide a few weeks ago) 12:30 - 2:30... come pray for our community... or have someone pray with you if you have special needs.
  • Ice-cream social... free cones...  [but we quickly need to ensure that project is going to be sufficiently done.  see above]  Hours will be...   and as long as supplies last, so come early.  We may have some watermelons as well.... stay tuned.
  • Let us know of special needs in the neighborhood -- we can't necessarily promise we'll have enough volunteers or time to get to them all, but we'd like to help as much as possible.  Eg... scraping home to prep for painting; wheelchair ramp; cleaning... or even just visiting with elderly or handicapped in our neighborhood.
  •

Registration... Advance-registration or onsite-registration?   T-shirts?  Costs?

$10 Registrants get an FHL 2007 tshirt.  [Actually the tshirt color is much brighter-blue than this pic.]  But we'd also like to raise some money for subsidizing tshirts for our neighbors who sign up to help too.  If you can buy an extra tshirt or two for some of our neighbors, contact Merlin Gonzales.

ANALYSIS:    What did we do RIGHT?  What did we do WRONG?  And what did we LEARN this Year?

  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  • Plan earlier.  And let's get more & more urban CHURCHES involved.
  • We accomplished everything we set out to accomplish, PTL !!!
  • One suggestion will be... next year on Urban Day... we need to realize we're coordinating not just one set of leaders, but really, two sets of leaders (urban/suburban)... we need to identify leaders earlier so they can coordinate directly... before d-day.   In fact, maybe have a leader-exchange Sunday prior to the event -- we could send our urban project leaders out to suburban churches (and vice-versa)... to help beat the drum and help you recruit, recruit, recruit.
  • More 'direction' at our urban projects... especially early, getting going.
  •  Loved the pics, .mp3s, and blogging coverage.  Do even more next year.  [but not from the frantic environment of the actual projects -- we need a media-truck type of environment so we can think/act clearly.
  • Loved the volunteers everyone sent to our area !  Great hearts & willing, serving, learning spirits.

Hello everyone!

Thanksgiving is upon us once again!  I realize everyone (most of us) have family gatherings scheduled and prepared for, however, if you know someone who is in need of a meal and a show of kindness on Thanksgiving please call:

Hope International
1205 E. New York Street
Indianapolis, Indiana 46202
317-955-0358
Pastor Jim/Jeanie Huiett

Give us a name, address and how many meals are needed and we will make sure they are served(orders will be taken through Tuesday November 20,2007).   One of the nice things about this ministry is that we not only share meals and love on Thanksgiving but every attempt is made to follow-up with those served to see what they might have need of all year through (Missionary Connection "Search and Rescue team members needed here").

Or maybe you would like to volunteer to help serve or deliver some of those meals and friendly hugs, pats and smiles on Thanksgiving.  Volunteers are welcome!!!  If this is something you would like to do or can do(any amount of time/help would be appreciated), please come to Hope International on Thanksgiving day anytime from 6AM- 4PM (drivers be there by 0900AM).  There is plenty to do.  Volunteers are needed for :

-Set Up( 0600AM)
-Meal preparation( 0600AM-?)
-Delivery (drivers be there by 0900AM)
-Clean up( Throughout the day)
- Anything in between as needed

Hey, you might want to volunteer beyond Thanksgiving too.  This is a great ministry built upon helping people find hope and  getting back on track everyday of the year.  You may want to share a love offering or other donation to help ...anything you can do is very appreciated!!! Come and see!! You won't have to look far to see that every penny, every donation of food, clothing ect., is used to help people get back up and live with hope again.

If I don't get to see you, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and may God bring to your remembrance all you have to be thankful for.  His peace be upon you!

Pastor Becki :o)
